Each bowl in The Things set is a work of art and sculpture. Crafted from stainless steel, the unconventional polygonal shape adds a unique touch to any table setting or home decor. The exterior of each bowl is meticulously polished to achieve a crisp, mirror finish, enhancing its visual appeal.
The realization of this design required special metalworking techniques due to its abnormal and polygonal shape. Laser cutting and welding were employed to create the block-like structure of the bowls. However, the complexity of the design posed challenges, resulting in a higher defective rate during production.
Technical specifications of The Things set include the use of stainless steel grade SUS316 (SS18/10) and a wall thickness of 1.0mm. The dimensions of each bowl are L141xW105xH116mm. The outer surface is mirror-polished, adding to its sleek and modern aesthetic.
Functionally, The Things can be used as tableware, home decor, or even as modern blocks for meditation. Its versatility allows for various interactions and interpretations, making it a truly multifaceted design.
The project began in April 2020 in Hong Kong and was completed in September 2020 in China. Throughout the design process, extensive research into metalworking production techniques was conducted to overcome the challenges posed by the unique shape of the bowls.
The Things has garnered recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category in 2021. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. The Things stands as a testament to the designer's technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
The Things is not just a set of bowls; it is a representation of equality, respect, and the interconnectedness of all things. Its thought-provoking design challenges conventional norms and invites us to see the world from a different perspective.
